Why This Primer Exists
Jesus specifically included earthquakes among the events that would characterize the period leading toward His return.
— Matthew 24:7, KJV
Earthquakes are therefore a legitimate prophetic signal to watch. But every earthquake is not a fulfillment of prophecy, and a busy month does not prove that the end has arrived.
What Jesus Said
In the Olivet Discourse—Jesus’ teaching about future events given on the Mount of Olives—He warned of wars, famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. He then called these events “the beginning of sorrows,” or birth pains (Matthew 24:8).
Earthquakes form part of that larger prophetic picture. But Jesus did not give His disciples a magnitude threshold, an annual earthquake count, or a formula for calculating the timing of His return.
Luke’s account adds that there will be “great earthquakes” in various places (Luke 21:11). This gives us reason to pay particular attention to large and destructive events instead of treating every small tremor as prophetically significant.
Earthquakes in Revelation
Earthquakes also appear during the judgments described in Revelation. Revelation 6:12 records a great earthquake when the sixth seal is opened. Other earthquakes accompany major judgments in Revelation 8:5, 11:13, and 11:19.
— Revelation 16:18, KJV
These passages describe specific future judgments. They do not permit us to label an earthquake happening today as one of Revelation’s earthquakes.
Present earthquakes should be watched as part of the broader pattern Jesus identified. They should not be confused with the specific future events described in Revelation.
What the Dashboard Measures
The DETN Signals Dashboard counts earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 or greater worldwide during the previous 30 days. The information comes from the U.S. Geological Survey.
This threshold helps keep the measurement meaningful. Small earthquakes occur constantly, and many are never felt. Counting every recorded tremor would produce an impressive number without necessarily revealing anything unusual.
A magnitude 6.0 earthquake can cause serious damage, particularly near populated areas or where buildings are vulnerable. Larger earthquakes can produce widespread destruction, landslides, fires, infrastructure failures, and tsunamis.
The dashboard also offers an expandable chart covering the previous 12 complete months. It separates magnitude 6.0–6.9 events from earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or greater.
What the Number Does Not Prove
More earthquakes may be detected today because monitoring instruments and reporting networks are more advanced and widespread than they were in the past. For that reason, raw totals from different historical periods cannot always be compared fairly.
Earthquake activity also naturally rises and falls. Several large earthquakes may occur close together without establishing a lasting global increase.
Why We Still Watch
We watch because Jesus said earthquakes in various places would be part of the conditions surrounding the approaching end. Scripture also reveals that extraordinary earthquakes will accompany future divine judgments.
Large earthquakes show how quickly cities, transportation, communications, and ordinary life can be disrupted. We watch for significant events, sustained patterns, unusual severity, widespread consequences, and how earthquakes may occur alongside the other conditions Scripture describes.
Why This Matters
Watch Without Fear
Bible prophecy was not given to make believers panic whenever the ground shakes. Jesus warned His followers beforehand so they would not be deceived or overcome by fear.
When disaster strikes, the Christian response includes prayer, mercy, practical assistance, and sharing the hope of Jesus Christ.
The earthquake tracker is not a prophetic countdown. It is a measured way of watching one of the conditions Jesus specifically told us to expect.
The way of escape is still open
The most important question remains:
Have you personally trusted Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life?
